Seven-metre SALT

Willie Koorts (SAAO) took this image on 2004 September 1, showing the SALT primary mirror populated with 37 mirror segments, making it an effective 7-m telescope.

Koorts writes: "It is amazing to think that a further 54 segments are needed to bring it up to its eventual 11-metre aperture. There hardly seems enough room to still fit in a further one-and-a-half times as many segments as are currently in place!"
