Astronomy presentation competition to be launched at the 7th ASSA Symposium

An astronomy presentation competition will be launched during a presentation workshop as part of the bi-annual ASSA Symposium that will be held at Boyden Observatory near Bloemfontein from 28 to 30 September 2006.  The workshop will be a contribution to Astronomy Month 2006 which is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology and managed by SAASTA. The competition is open to all interested persons in Southern Africa. The final of the competition will take place as part of Astronomy Month 2007 between 8 finalists, one selected by each of the 8 ASSA branches in Southern Africa. Each participant will have to impress a public audience with a 20 minute multi-media astronomy presentation and/or demonstration. Each finalist will also have to submit a portfolio of at least 3 events where he/she has presented the presentation to a total of at least 200 learners or members of the public. A first prize of R 2 000 and a second prize of R 1 000 will be awarded plus prizes that can be obtained from additional sponsorships.

The 2006 ASSA Symposium will be hosted and organized by the Bloemfontein Centre of ASSA, in association with Boyden Observatory.  The website can be found at www.assabfn.co.za/symposium2006. For more information, e-mail Dr. Matie Hoffman at [HoffmaMJ.SCI@mail.uovs.ac.za]
