Serious Amateur Astronomy: Linking with Professionals
The 2006 ASSA Symposium will be hosted by the Bloemfontein Centre, in association with Boyden Observatory, from 28 to 30 September 2006. Boyden's unique atmosphere and facilities make the Observatory the ideal venue for such an event. Accommodation in a vacation resort overlooking the Modderriver is conveniently available at the foot of the Boyden koppie. Boyden Observatory provides a special meeting platform for professional, amateur and popular astronomy and thus also serves as a symbol for the theme of the Symposium: "Serious Amateur Astronomy: Linking with Professionals" .
The future of serious amateur astronomy stands before great challenges. The Symposium will focus on various topics where the amateur astronomer can make a worthwhile contribution to astronomy as science and even contribute to professional publications. Technological developments have also opened up new opportunities for amateur astronomy. Workshops in variable star observations and amateur CCD photometry are only some of the topics recommended thus far. Professional astronomers could even act as advisors during such workshops.
