Introduction to Double Star Observing

The Introduction to Double Star Observing offers a gentle introduction to what double stars are and how you can observe them.

About the Section

The purpose of the Double Star Section is to help, encourage and support ASSA members interested in the observation of double stars: it is one of the few areas of astronomy where amateurs can make a real contribution. Even without specialised equipment, it is possible for amateur astronomers to contribute to the field of double star observations and measurements.

The double star section will introduce observers to some of the finest double and multiple stars visible in the Southern Hemisphere. Each month it is possible to download a list of doubles stars for observation. In addition there will be regular features on:

  • lists of double stars that need observing,
  • images of double stars,
  • challenges to test your skills and your equipment,
  • reports on observations made,
  • tips on observing techniques
